Overview
The TimeLine Blocked Process Monitoring Option extends the TimeLine performance monitor by providing details and summary reports on blocked process activity in your monitored database servers.
Major benefits include:
- Blocking Tree graphically displays blockers and victims, so you can quickly identify the root cause of blocking conditions
- Optional Top-N reports show you the SQL, stored procedures, users and client applications that caused or were the victims of blocking the most often
- Optional alerting notifies you when blocking conditions of interest have occurred, and can take user-definable actions
Features
The TimeLine Blocked Process Monitoring Option includes features to help you diagnose blocking situations in your database servers.
Our unique Blocking Tree lists blocking causes and victims hierarchically, so you can identify at a glance which processes are causing the most blocking in your servers.
When used in conjunction with SQL Capture, you can easily navigate to see the history of SQL statements that led up to the blocking condition. Being able to step forward and backward in time like this is an invaluable aid in diagnosing how blocking develops on your server.
The TimeLine Blocked Process Monitoring Option also includes high-level reporting, which gives you an overview of the top causes and victims of blocking.
You can view reports using the following criteria:
- Top-N Applications By Blocked Time or Blocking Others Time
- Top-N Users By Blocked Time or Blocking Others Time
- Top-N Transaction Names By Blocked Time or Blocking Others Time
- Top-N Client Addresses By Blocked Time or Blocking Others Time
- Top-N Host Names By Blocked Time or Blocking Others Time
- Top-N SQL Texts By Blocked Time or Blocking Others Time
- Top-N Stored Procedures By Blocked Time or Blocking Others Time
Each of these reports can be configured to report the top blocking causes, or the top blocking victims.
For each application, user or other item listed in the report, the report gives detailed performance information about the item, showing its accumulated I/O counts, CPU usage and more.
Technology
The TimeLine Blocked Process Monitoring Option uses process data gathered by TimeLine snapshots, which are triggered on a timed basis or (when using the TimeLine Alerting Option) by alerts you have defined.
On SAP Sybase ASE servers, TimeLine can optionally use ASE’s MDA monitoring tables to obtain additional details and performance metrics about each database process.
Integration
When used in conjunction with SQL Capture, the Blocking Tree in TimeLine lets you view recent SQL statements executed by processes involved in a blocking situation, all in a single integrated view.
Database Support
The TimeLine Blocked Process Monitoring Option supports the following database servers and versions:
- SAP Sybase ASE 11.0 through 16.0
- Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 through 2022
